Nothing OS 5.0 Rollout Begins: Android 17 Update for Phone (3)

Nothing OS 5.0

Nothing has started rolling out the stable version of Nothing OS 5.0, its biggest software release yet, beginning with the Nothing Phone (3). Based on Android 17, the update packs more than 80 changes covering design, personalisation, performance and AI features. Other Nothing and CMF devices are expected to follow over the coming months, with stable releases for several models planned for November.

What’s New in Nothing OS 5.0

The headline change is a redesigned Home Screen with transparent details across widgets and the search bar, paired with an adaptive colour system that draws shades from the user’s wallpaper to create a unified look. Nothing has also introduced Geist, a new system typeface, alongside refreshed icons, spacing, materials and motion across the Settings app, status bar, Camera and Gallery.

Home screen editing gets easier too — batch editing lets users move multiple apps and widgets together across screens. Two new widgets have been added: Collector, for creating visual collections of favourite objects, and Away Time, which tracks the periods when you put your phone down.

Lock Screen and Glyph Updates

The Lock Screen gains new clock faces, headlined by the Micrographics clock — a hardware-inspired design that packs the date, time, weather and upcoming meetings into one glanceable layout. A second clock called Gooey offers a bolder, more playful option, and the lock screen now supports colour options drawn from the wallpaper.

Nothing has also launched a dedicated Glyph app that brings customised sounds, schedules and features into one place, alongside a new Glyph Timer widget — giving Phone (3) owners more control over the signature light system.

AI Features: Essential Space Gets Smarter

Nothing’s Essential AI suite receives several upgrades. Essential Voice offers faster, cleaner transcription, while Essential Space adds Smart Collections to help organise saved content. The Essential Apps Builder lets users describe an app they want and build AI-powered applications on the phone without writing code, though access is being introduced gradually. Some Essential Space improvements will arrive separately via Google Play rather than through the system update itself.

Performance and Android 17 Changes

Nothing says everyday interactions — app launches, scrolling, touch response, multitasking and background app behaviour — are faster thanks to smarter background management and improved resource management. Animations respond instantly when gestures are reversed midway, and Quick Settings gets faster single-tap Bluetooth controls.

Android 17 brings further platform-level changes, including separate Notifications and Quick Settings panels, cross-ecosystem file sharing via QR codes, floating screen-recording controls, a three-colour status bar privacy indicator system, independent digital assistant volume controls, enhanced HDR brightness for photos and videos, and an expanded Dark Theme for apps without native support.
